The morning was drizzly in Bendiljati Wetan Village, Sumber Gempol, Tulungagung – East Java, having been raining the whole night, but this did not dampen the spirit of several men to catch pangasius fish.  Three men were in the pond – selecting and passing the fish to those outside.  With big smiles on their faces, they load the catch on to the truck, ready to deliver to the local market in Tulungagung. The men are part of the Mina Lestari fishers’ group.

The business owner, Siti Nikmaziah, mother of two, established Mina Lestari group seventeen years ago, for women left by husbands who have become migrant workers.

Sumber Gempol District has been Tulungagung’s leading fisheries producer since the 1990s.  Tulungagung supplies 68% of the province’s pangasius fish production. Siti realized that pangasius faming was profitable and has taken advantage of the Government and SMART-Fish Indonesia’s introduction of home-made fish feed. She is optimistic of the profitable results from the programme.

Mina Lestari group currently has thirty-five members, mainly women. So far, they have managed to get bank loans with collective collateral.
The group has a bigger dream to establish a “Fishery Kampong” – a village renowned for fish products - which is expected to create jobs and other benefits for the community.
